Interns and Young Graduates
Are you an accounting student or recent graduate looking for the best place to complete an internship or start your career? We are proud to help the next generation of accountants by welcoming interns for paid internships as well as dedicated young graduates every year. You’ll have the opportunity to work with directors and partners on a variety of mandates that will help broaden your knowledge and put into practice what you learned in class.
The small and larger mandates we propose will give you a hand in all aspects of public accounting. You will, for example, have the opportunity to carry out compilations, review and audit the financial statements of private, public, and parapublic businesses, and help prepare income tax returns for individuals, corporations, and trusts.
We offer interns numerous benefits, including various training opportunities, personalized coaching, state-of-the-art work tools, help with case study correction, paid exam days, reimbursement of tuition fees for recognized preparatory courses and professional exams, and reimbursement of membership fees for provincial orders and institutions.
In addition to offering an environment that promotes your academic and professional development, Marcil Lavallée is also a great place to make friends. Our summer cruise, family picnic, various cocktail parties, and Christmas party are perfect opportunities to get together in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and spend time with your colleagues and their families. You’ll meet interesting people with whom you will form lasting friendships.

University Recruiting
Each year colleges and universities across Canada organize on-campus recruiting sessions with potential employers to help students find internships where they can put into practice the knowledge they have acquired in class.
Marcil Lavallée works together with the University of Ottawa and Université du Québec en Outaouais to meet students in the Bachelor of Administration (Accounting) and Master of Public Accounting programs and offer a select number the opportunity to improve their skills and put their talent to use.
Come meet with our recruiters to discover what makes us stand out from other firms and what you can expect during an internship. Our recruiters will take advantage of this opportunity to get to know you and evaluate your non-technical skills. In addition to experience and good grades, we attach great importance to personality.
If you’re ready to meet our challenges and think you have the qualities we seek in an intern, we invite you to consult the Contact Us section to submit your application.
If our firm does not recruit at your university but meets your expectations, please call general manager Charles Dutrisac at 613-745-8387, ext. 224. He will guide you and answer your questions.
We draw up a list of students to invite for interview from all applications received. Interviews take place directly on the university campus. For you, it’s an opportunity to get to know us and make yourself noticed. For us, it’s an efficient way to determine which candidates best fit with our team and values.
At the end of the interview process, a committee reviews each applicant. A number of factors are taken into account in the selection process, namely education, work experience, grades, volunteer work, and, of course, personality. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and bilingualism are also important assets.
Before making our final selection, we invite all candidates who were interviewed to visit our office and attend a luncheon meeting with the entire staff. This is an opportunity for you to talk to people and help them get to know you. Take advantage of the occasion to ask questions and see whether you’re really interested in an internship with us. If you are, please tell us! A number of our employees—and even partners—started their careers with us as interns. Come discover our team in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
We contact candidates directly to inform them of our decision and the steps to be taken, as the case may be. Selected candidates receive a job offer by email and by mail.
Internship Overview
You will be greeted by the general manager, who will give you an integration plan and introduce you to the person in charge of training. You will then take part in a training session designed to familiarize you with our work methods, culture, inhouse practices, software, etc. You will have the opportunity to talk to the other interns and start forging ties with your new colleagues.
You will be assigned to a director, who will answer your questions and accompany you throughout your internship. During your first internship, you will take part in small mandates (i.e., notices to the reader and review engagements), which will be conducted entirely at the office to ensure better supervision and coaching. It is important that you learn and develop good work methods before going on to bigger mandates.
During your second internship, you will have more self-confidence and already be comfortable with our work methods. You will go to clients to perform small examinations on your own. You will also take part in certification mandates under the supervision of case managers.
We are certain you will enjoy your internship with us and have an enriching experience that will lead you to the next stage of your career.
Training
Over the years the firm has developed structured, personalized, and user-friendly training for interns with a unique human approach.
When you arrive at the firm, you will receive three to four days of training with an experienced director, who will explain in detail how to prepare a complete client file and use the various work tools available (Caseware, Caseview, Taxprep, intranet, etc.), as well as the policies and procedures to follow at the firm.
After your initial training, we will assign you to a director, who will act as a technical and professional resource person and supervise your first mandates to ensure uniformity, promote learning, and guide you in meeting set goals. You will take part in a mandate, from start to finish, that will provide you with concrete experience and prepare you for your professional examinations.
You will receive daily training and regular feedback to help you assess your progress more easily. When you have completed your biggest mandates, you will undergo a one-time evaluation of your technical knowledge and work management ability. The director in charge of the file will take the opportunity to point out areas to be improved to help you reach your full potential as quickly as possible.
You will also have the opportunity to act as second auditor in various mandates, with the support of a more experienced professional who can help you benefit from his/her experience and knowledge.
Marcil Lavallée is a team, which means you will have the opportunity to work with the partners, who take a close interest in your progress. They collaborate with their team and do everything possible to ensure you receive the best training possible.
You will develop in a welcoming, stimulating, and diversified work environment. For the more adventurous, you will have the opportunity to visit exotic parts of the world, such as Jamaica, Haiti, Hong Kong, and Africa, to name just a few. You will return with a broader perspective and a wealth of information.
As part of your work at Marcil Lavallée, you will gain experience and professional knowledge that will prove valuable during your examinations. To learn more, consult the Preparation for the UFE section.
Preparation for the UFE
The Uniform Final Examination (UFE) is a nationwide exam that leads to certification as a chartered accountant (CA) in Canada. It consists of three separate exams given on three consecutive days. To pass the UFE, you must demonstrate that you have the required knowledge, professional judgment, and ethics to begin your career as a professional accountant.
CA training is not without its challenges, but thanks to your sustained efforts and our uncompromising support, your success is within easy reach. We care about your success and do our utmost to support you in your endeavor.
Our UFE preparation program provides personalized followup tailored to your needs and the program in which you are enrolled (Ontario preparatory program or Quebec professional training program [DESS]).
As part of your internship at Marcil Lavallée and throughout the UFE preparation process, you will receive major support in drafting practical cases developed according to your individual study plan. Support consists of case analysis and correction as well as individual meetings to assess your proficiency in skill indicators and drafting technique.
An experienced accountant will help you set goals aimed at improving your performance in future cases and will follow up regularly to ensure that these goals are met. He/she may also give you specific exercises to help you tackle your own personal challenges and broaden your knowledge.
You will also take part in group sessions with other interns to review certain aspects related to skill indicators such as performance measurement, certification, and taxation. You will have the opportunity to take part in group sessions to discuss specific cases and performance indicators related to these cases. At certain meetings, you can benefit from the expertise of our seasoned professionals, who are always delighted to share their experience with up-and-coming accountants.
We offer Ontario students support in preparing for the Core-Knowledge Exam (CKE) as required and training sessions at the School of Accountancy (Summer School).
At Marcil Lavallée you will be exposed to all aspects of public accounting by taking part in all types of mandates, small to large, and thereby acquire the diversified experience and professional knowledge that will help you maximize your chances of passing the Uniform Final Examination of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
